About This Item

New York: Basic Books, Inc., Publishers, 1976. Cloth, xxi, 470 pages, [8] leaves of plates, illustrations, facsimiles, portraits; 24 cm. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Age toning, edges lightly soiled. Dust jacket, with light edgewear, protected in a mylar cover. This book champions gay writers in England, and raises more questions than it answers. The general thesis is that literary England in the 1920s was dominated by a group of gay men (dandies & aesthetes in the tradition of Oscar Wilde represented by Harold Acton, Brian Howard, Evelyn Waugh, others), which became displaced during the Depression of the 1930s (by authors such as George Orwell and F. R. Leavis). The metaphor of the "Children of the Sun" seems a little bewildering & anachronistic today, but it seems to derive from the German youth movement at the turn of the century. The many contradictions of this book make it an an interesting read.. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo.
