About This Item

Queen's Road and Duddell Street, HongKong: Printed by Kelly & Walsh, Ltd.,, 1899. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo (13 x 20. 5 cm). pp. [viii], 130, [2]; original endpapers, half title, title page. Published patterned cloth with red lettering to the front board, very good and strong, cloth a little marked. Contents clean and tight, original endpapers, no inscriptions, front internal hinge slightly worn. The prefact reads: "The three plays and two poems in this little volume are reprinted, with slight alterations, from the China Review. The introductory account of Chinese theatrical affairs has never before appeared in print. But, since it contains a fairly full description of the Chinese stage and everything connected with it, the author hopes that besides assisting the reader in thoroughly understanding the plays, it will prove instructive and entertaining". The three plays in question are 'The Willow Lute' (Qin si liu), 'The Golden Leafed Chrysanthemum? (Jin ye ju), and 'The Sacrifice for the Soul of Ho Man Sau' (Fu jian He Wenxiu), all popular plays in the late Qing dynasty. Overall a very good copy..
