The first volume only of a three volume work.Containing an account of China by the second Governor of Hong-Kong, Sir John Francis Davis, a British diplomat and sinologist who was the first President of Royal Asiatic Society Hong Kong. With descriptive, geographical, and historical notes on the country; as well as notes on its government and legislation, character and institution, religion, manners and customs, its literature, and much more.Illustrated with numerous vignettes throughout. One illustration has been hand-coloured by a prior owner.With the inscription of Henry Townsend to the front free endpaper. In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered board. Rubbing to centre of front board, back strip head and tail, and front joint. Rear hinge strained and a touch tender. Inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned, but generally clean. One illustration hand coloured by a prior owner. Very Good
