About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers [1959], 1959. First printing. Hardcover. Very near Fine/Very Good+. 8vo. [6], vii-xiv, [2], 202, [6] pp. Quarter black cloth over purple cloth boards with gold lettering on the spine. Price of $3.50 on front flap of jacket. With ten plates drawn by the author in Chinese style. Van Gulik's novel incorporates features of the magisterial political system of China during the Tang Dynasty, and is partly based on the historical Judge Dee's life. A lovely copy of the third of van Gulik's original mystery novels set in China. Hubin 820. A very near fine book in a Very Good+ dust jacket with a few hints of edge wear, the number '49' written on the front flap of the dust jacket, and age toning to the reverse of the jacket.
