About This Item

Londini: [Henry Hills], 1709. No Binding. Fair. Disbound, [2], (iii-vi), 7-15 pp, [1] adverts, light browning, with a tiny circular wormhole in the bottom margin, forward tp edge trimmed affecting vignette. Uncommon! (177*110 mm). (ESTC T168176. Foxon, R197). Work is attributed to Thomas Richards of Jesus College, Oxford. Richards wrote it in response to Edward Holdsworth's 'Muscipula', published: London, 1709. 'Muscipula' ridiculed the Welsh, and Richards retaliated with his 'Hoglandia' a verse in Latin which satirizes Hampshire, Holdsworth's native county. First word transliterated from the Greek. Dedication on p. iii-iv is to "H--S--" [i.e. Henry Sacheverell] and is signed "M.C." (Maredyduys Caduganus = pseudonym for Richards). cf. Halkett and Laing. Signatures: A8. "'Apparently a piracy' (Foxon)."--ESTC. Catalogue of poems "printed and sold by Henry Hills," on last page. According to Foxon and ESTC there were 4 printings of title in 1709; two were piracies, the other two variants were issued with differing pagination and signatures. With an unsigned woodcut vignette of a Hampshire hog on title page. Catalogue of poems "printed and sold by Henry Hills," on last page. This is the third issue. It is the first copy with the large cut of the Hampshire Hog on the title page. This learned Welshman's satire is entirely in Latin.
