About This Item

1732. 17.1 x 15.4 cm on 18th century laid paper. Fine impression. Before the text beneath the image.... Paulson, 127.... The print shows a rehearsal of the oratorio "Judith", written by William Huggins (1696-1761), with music by William Defesch. It was performed on 16 February 1732/1733, at Lincoln's Inn Fields. Huggins (1696-1761) was a close friend of Hogarth's. William Defesch (ca. 1680-1758) was a violinist, a chapelmaster in Antwerp before he came to England, and subsequently the leader of the band at Marylebone Gardens. The corner figure looking over the notes is identified as William Tothall, one of Hogarth's colleagues on the "Peregrination".
