About This Item

Barcelona, Spain: Ediciones Poligrafa, 1996. First Edition. First Printing.. Softcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Barcelona, Spain: Ediciones Poligrafa, 1996. Softcover. Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 223 pages. Site-Specific Installation, presented as a retrospective monograph. One of the very best books on the art and achievement of Christian Boltanski. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original simultaneously with the hardcover edition. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Christian Boltanski: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Art by Christian Boltanski. Curated by Gloria Moure, Director of the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporanea. Essays by Jean Clair, Jose Jimenez, and other contributors. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Spain to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of "Advento" ("Arrival") , his site-specific installation at the San Domingo de Bonaval Church Santiago de Compostela Spain in 1996. Presents Christian Boltanski's "Advent And Other Times". One of the artist's most sublime site-specific installations, fulfilling the Jewish artist's hope of creating an ecumenical installation in a Catholic church setting. It is, simultaneously, the first major retrospective of his work in Spain. Boltanski thus created a "work of works", site-specific yet also inclusive (of his previous creations, of "other times") . Thirty years ago, Christian Boltanski's first one-man exhibition opened in Paris, in May 1968, one of the epochal events of modern history. That is to say, his "advent" or artistic "arrival" happened during and coincided with the moment of "rupture" - Alain Badiou's central philosophical concept - whose significance continues to inspire and be felt to this day. As such, "if his work is examined retrospectively and compared to what young artists are producing today, a considerable number of connections is revealed which denote identification between different creative approaches as well as his considerable influence" (Gloria Moure) . That is to say, Boltanski's irreverent - and honest - stance towards "May 1968" youthful idealism recognizes yet ultimately transcends the latter: "Art is not separate from life but its highest form". Now that he is dead - July 14, 2021, his "departure" time - the grief one feels for the vanished Life is somehow mitigated by the timeless beauty of the Art. An absolute "must-have" title for Christian Boltanski collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in pencil on the front free endpaper by Christian Boltanski. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great Boltanski classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Edition/First Printing (Softcover) available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color plates. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century and our time. A fine collectible copy.
