A nice copy that follows the intrigue, betrayal, and political maneuvering of the court, centered around the infamous St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in 1572, where thousands of Huguenots were killed. Through the eyes of the protagonist, Mérimée provides a vivid portrayal of the era's brutality, religious fanaticism, and political instability, while also exploring themes of love, power, and moral ambiguity.
