About This Item

Shanghai: General Evangelical Protestant Missionary Society of Germany. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1902. First Edition. Hardcover. Xvi, 250, xlv pp. Frontis plate of E. Faber with tissue guard. Tall octavo. In what appears to be original 3/4 black leather with black shagreen cloth boards, gilt to spine. Spine has been repaired with original cover laid down. Interior has book plate of Sir Edmund Walker (1848-1924) a Canadian banker and cultural philanthropist who was a force behind the founding of the Univ. Of Toronto, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario and much more. Paper is lightly toned, a small dark smudge at the gutter at the last blank, edges are marbled, clean and unmarked inside, with solid binding. A very nice copy of this scarce title with nice provenance. 1st Edition. , printed at the American Presbyterian Mission Press. With four appendixes, including The Illegitimate States; The Illegitimate Dynasties; The six great chancellors of Ts'in; and Studies in Giles' Chinese Biographical Dictionary. Ernst Faber (1839-1899) worked in China as a Christian missionary and was fluent in Chinese, German, English and a number of other languages. He saw himself as an intercultural agent who gradually came to be a Christian humanist working with the Chinese rather than necessarily trying to convert them and he thought that "the doctrine of the Gospel was in harmony with the mind of China." Scarce and interesting. In English with some Chinese. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 250 pages .
