Princeton, New Jersey: Princeton University Press, 1964. first printing. Hardcover. Good/good. Blue cloth and gilt title on spine, xiii and 192 pages, illustrated with 50 musical examples, 24cm tall, octavo, index and bibliography. Probable first printing, no additional printings noted. Inked on the front endpaper is the ownership signature of Arthur Mendel, to whom the book is dedicated. Mendel was a professor of music and departmental chair at Princeton University. On the dedication page: "To Arthur Mendel who directed and encouraged me in this study from its beginning." Twelve pages show pencilled corrections to the text, some requiring musical knowledge to spot, others not. A list of the 12 pages showing corrections is pencilled on the front endpaper, perhaps a proof copy. The spine panel of the dust jacket shows brown tone and a 0.5in tear at the foot. Light rubbing at the head and foot of spine and at the joint, where covers meet the spine. A good in a good jacket.
