About This Item

Cambridge, MA: Harvard Univ. Press. Hardcover. 1960. 2nd printing. 8vo 148pp . Fine in Very Good DJ. Bookplate on front pastedown. DJ and streak on front panel darkened. In tracing the history of a musical literature which is often meretricious, trite, and worse, the author goes back to the beginnings of sacred music and discovers unsurpassed ecclesiastical works in the plainsong of the early Church and Reformation chorale. From these ideals he sets up his requirements for church music. He concludes that the present state of church music is one to call forth neither pride nor optimism .
