About This Item
[Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, c.1909 - 1914]. Albumen photograph on old mount. 7½ x 9½ inches. Fine condition.
Excellent photograph, with rich tonal contrast, of a military parade formation in front of the Hotel Conner in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Soldiers gather under a patriotic arch with a hanging banner: "Welcome Back to Harpers Ferry, N.G.D.C." and well-dressed spectators fill the hotel's balcony and street. In the foreground, a portion of a reviewing stand is seen.
Between 1908 to 1914, the Washington, D.C. National Guard trained at Camp Ordway, in part because "the battles fought at Harpers Ferry during the Civil War were largely influenced by terrain, so the area could impart valuable knowledge to the National Guard members. Soldiers at the camp learned several drills ranging from artillery to small arms, wireless radio and marching. The citizens of Harpers Ferry loved the presence of the National Guard Troops in their town." (Horn, World War I and Jefferson County, West Virginia -illustrating another parade photo)
