About This Item
Partly printed railroad pass for Benjamin Scott on his way to enlist with a "Col[ored] Reg[iment]. Columbus, OH, 10 August 1863. Visible 5 3/4 x 3 3/4 in. - completed in manuscript for "Ben. Scott + one other" for a rail journey on the C+M Rail Road from Youngstown to Cleveland. Signed by Quartermaster General Geo. B. Wright. Left edge inscribed "Col Reg", indicating "Colored Regiment. "Likely a pass for Benjamin Scott who enlisted on 4 September 1863 as a "Colored Cook" and was mustered into Company F of the 32nd Ohio Infantry on the same day. Many free blacks and emancipated slaves voluntarily served in the Union Army, forming the United States Colored Troops (USCT). Some also became scouts, guides, spies, cooks, hospital workers, and blacksmiths contributing immensely to the Union war effort for the balance of the Civil War. Nearly 40,000 black soldiers died over the course of the war, but drawing upon the training they received in the military, many former black troops became community leaders after the civil war.
