New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1904. First edition. Octavo with eight full page portraits of King. Publisher's quarter vellum over blue-gray boards, gilt device of a helmet on front, gilt spine and cover lettering, top edge gilt, remainder uncut. Vellum spine somewhat mottled, boards a bit browned due to life in a slipcase. A very good copy.This is a posthumous gathering of essays in tribute to Clarence King. Contributors include James D. Hague (who also owns the copyright on this book), John Hay, William Dean Howells, Henry Adams, Edward Cary and etc. It also contains the first printing of King's short story "The Helmet of Mambrino".
