Description:
Portland, Maine:: Rebecca Goodale,, 2002.. Edition of 10. 9 x 8.5" hand-colored prints with collage in magic wallet binding with wraparound case. Rebecca Goodale: "Two rare moths in Maine that share the same habitat are winged adults during different months, so even though they live together they are never seen at the same time." From Goodale's Threatened and Endangered Exhibit, this book focuses on two threatened Maine moths that share a common habitat but mature in different months. Goodale uses a magic wallet form which unites the twilight moth, April, and zanclognatha, July, in a pitch pine / scrub oak barren setting. Using this format restricts the viewer to see both moths simultaneously but these two species are adults in different seasons so one would not see them in the same view.

Very Good. Disbound. Set of 25 hand-colored stone lithographic plates from "Illustrations of British Birds" by Henry L. Meyer, published by Longman's & Co. From 1835 to 1841. Plates measure about 14 ½ x 10 ¼ inches. All are in very good condition. Each is mounted with tape to a cardstock board and topped with a cardstock frame and clear plastic cover. Most have minor toning and some have very mild soiling. A few have a slightly rough edge on one side where they were bound. Meyer's name followed by a date (1839-1841) appears on some of the plates. Henry L. Meyer (1797-1865) and his wife Mary Ann produced "Illustrations of British Birds" in 79 parts with over 300 hand-colored lithographic plates between 1835 and 1841. Meyer is an obscure figure with Mullens and Swann's "A Bibliography of British Ornithology
" noting that the authors were unable to find a published account of Meyer, instead using interviews with his daughter to…

ABOUT THIS BOOK: From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Gulf, a sweeping cultural and natural history of the bald eagle in America. The bald eagle is regal but fearless, a bird you're not inclined to argue with. For centuries, Americans have celebrated it as "majestic" and "noble," yet savaged the living bird behind their national symbol as a malicious predator of livestock and, falsely, a snatcher of babies. Taking us from before the nation's founding through inconceivable resurgences of this enduring all-American species, Jack E. Davis contrasts the…

ILLUSTRATED COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF ADAPTATIONS OF BIRDS FOR BREEDING BY EXPERT ON DARWIN'S FINCHES. 10 inches tall mauve cloth binding, gilt title to spine, unmarked, very good in good price-clipped dust jacket with edge tears. From dust jacket: "The primary aim of this book is an interpretation of the main adaptations of birds for breeding-whether a species lests solitarily or in colonies, whether it is monogamous or has several mates, the lumber of eggs that it lays, the relative size of its eggs, the rate of development of its eggs and young, and the age at which it first breeds. This book is the first comprehensive survey of these points that has been made, so readers can see what is known, and what emains to be discovered, and hence may be stimulated to add to knowledge. Description:
Rising from sandbars on the Platte River with clarion calls, the sandhill crane (Grus canadensis) feels the urgency of spring migration. Elegant, noble, and spiritual, the sandhill crane is one of the most ancient of all birds. More than a half-million strong, flying in squadrons, these majestic creatures point northward to their Arctic and sub-Arctic breeding ranges. Theirs is an epic story of endurance through the ages. With 153 stunning color photographs, On Ancient Wings presents sandhill cranes in their wild but increasingly compromised habitats today. Over the course of five years, Michael Forsberg documented the tall gray birds in habitats ranging from the Alaskan tundra, to the arid High Plains, from Cuban nature preserves to suburban backyards. With an eye for beauty and an uncommon persistence, the author documents the cranes' challenges to adapt and survive in a rapidly changing natural world. Forsberg argues that humankind, for its own sake, should secure the cranes' place in the future.…
