first (sole) edition tall 8vo. [4], 343, [1 (blank)], [7 (ondex)], [1 (errata)]pp., 11 plates (7 folding), 2 folding tables, contemporary sprinkled calf, spine panelled by gilt fillets and with a plum morocco label gilt, plate 7 bound in wrong position, else a nice copy. Rare.
Signed by a contemporary doctor, "C. G. [?] Foott, M.D.".

Contains GARRISON & MORTON 2925 ESTC t106133
Comprises 18 papers, including 5 by John Hunter, 1 by Edward Jenner, 3 by Everard Home, 4 by Matthew Baillie, 2 by George Fordyce, 1 by Anthony Carlisle, and 1 by John Clarke. This is the first publication of the society which had been founded in 1783. Two further volumes of transactions were issued, one in 1800, and another in 1812, each with different imprints.One of papers is Home's 'An Account of Mr. Hunter's Method of performing the Operation for the Cure of the Popliteal Aneurism', p.138-181. This paper, also published in the London Medical Journal, was the "First description of John Hunter's method of treating popliteal aneurysm. This consisted in a single ligature of the artery at a distance high in the healthy tissue. Recorded by his brother-in-law" [Garrison & Morton]. This paper was reprinted in Medical Classics, 1940, v.4.
