About This Item

Paris: Editions Surréalistes, 1932. First trade edition. 168, [2]pp. 8vo. Red printed wrappers. A fine copy; one of only two titles by Crevel published by "Editions Surrealistes.. First trade edition. 168, [2]pp. 8vo. Crevel, who committed suicide in 1935, at age 35, was considered, along with Paul Eluard, one of the outstanding poets of the Surrealist movement. Anna Balakian, in her book Literary Originals of Surrealism, describes Crevel's book, Le Clavecin de Diderot, as the attempt by the Surrealists to free themselves of reason: "Reason has betrayed the Mind; now the mind must find ways of freeing itself of reason." The book incorporates the use of poetry and prose poetry throughout the text. Gresham's A Bibliography of the Surrealist Movement in France, p. 15]
