About This Item
London: T. Fisher Unwin. 1923. First edition in English, first printing. First edition in English, first printing. Publisher's original blue cloth with titles in blind to the upper board and gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. Frontispiece portrait and 21 further illustrations, mostly photographic, throughout the text. A better than very good copy, the binding square and firm with bumping to the spine tips and corners, the cloth and gilt are bright and fresh. The contents, with a small previous owner's name to the front endpaper, are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the rubbed and nicked dustwrapper that is a little marked and toned to the spine and panel edges. Not price-clipped (8s 6d net to the lower front flap). Scarce in dustwrapper. An avid mountain climber, the author was a scholar and ordained priest who reached the summits of Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc and Presolana. By the time of this English publication he was elected Pope taking the name of Pius XI. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request.
