About This Item
N.p.: The Pure Oil Company, 1936. Hardcover. Complete 3-volume set. 12mo. Blue paper over boards with white lettering and pictorial stamping. 64pp, 64pp, 64pp. Numerous illustrations. Very good. Bindings faintly sunned, else tight, clean, quite attractive. Tight and nice first edition of this slim triple decker. The first volume is subtitled "Book One: Wings of Youth," the second volume "Book Two: Hawaii to Hollywood" and the third volume "Book Three: Lost in Siberia." James J. "Jimmie" Mattern (1905-88) was the aviation equivalent of a "B" movie actor. He was a test pilot, stunt man and wanna-bee adventurer a la Amelia Earhart who achieved a bit of reknown in the 1930s and milked it for all it was worth for a short-lived 1935 radio program, "The Diary of Jimmy Mattern," for a Chicago-based oil company.
