London: Longmans, 1817. Limited. hardcover. very good. Frontispiece portrait of Puckle; decorative title, and 27 small wood engravings by Thurston and James Thompson. [10], x, 96 pages. Short 4to, in an fine contemporary binding of diced Russia covers, the boards with armorial centerpiece surrounded by elaborate gilt and blind-stamped foliate borders. Red morocco spine, presumably later, but equally ornate; inner & outer dentelles, marbled edges. London: Printed for the proprietor by John Johnson, and sold by Longman, et al., 1817. The frontis and title are foxed and dampstained but other pages generally quite clean. A very good copy in very attractive and intriguing early binding.<br/> <br/> Limited Edition - one of only 200 large paper copies, with the illustrations printed on smooth paper and skillfully laid in. Reprint of the 1711 edition of this popular collection of character sketches, embellished by Thurston illustrations. "A neat edition." Lowndes 2005.<br/> <br/>
