About This Item
New York: Dodd, Mead & Co., 1920. First Edition. . Hardcover. Very Good. This is one of seven mystery novels written by Hay, a journalist and one of the founders of the National Press Club, in the late teens and early 20s of the last century. Many of these mysteries featured criminologist and consulting detective, Jefferson Hastings. This time, Hastings is a guest at the estate of very wealthy Arthur Sloan when a woman's corpse is found on Sloan's well-manicured lawn. First Edition, First Printing. About 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches, 288 pages in yellow cloth-covered boards with title and author on front cover and spine in black letters. Sorry, no dustjacket. There are faint smudges about an inch long under the word "Clue!" on the front cover as if at some point the ink was dampened and ran slightly, with an irregularly-shaped, 3/8-inch dash just to the right and below the title. The back cover shows a small stain in its lower corner. Spine ends and corners are slightly worn and lightly bumped. Yellow cloth appears to have darkened slightly over time. Some light soiling on text edges, o/w text is complete, clean and unmarked, perhaps a touch age-tanned. Hinges are intact, binding firm, unusual in a book nearly a century old. Overall, a very decent first edition copy of this scarce novel by Hay.
