About This Item
Publisher: Salisbury Press / Superior Publishing Company, Seattle. Oversized. Hardcover in brown faux leather stamped in gilt lettering on cover. Has pictoral dust jacket with large photo of Russell Slight evidence of spine regluing otherwise tight, clean copy. Dust jacket has an internal area where there was a tear and it's been repaired, invisible to the outside. Foreword by U.S. Senator Mike Mansfield. The publisher shares a story about the plates from which this book was printed: ''The plates were made fifty years ago (remember this was printed in 1970), some as early as 1903 just six years after the art of photo-engraving came into being. Most of the earlier plates were three-color process plates, a method now nearly obsolete, replaced by the modern four-color process. With crude equipment the skilled artisans who were the first photoengravers staged, re-etched, burnished and tooled their copper plates so carefully that even on the clumsy, lumbering presses of the time, printers were able to create quality reproductions equal t those produced on the modern high speed four-color presses of today. The watercolor, 'The Picture Writer' is printed here for the first time, and is not part of the original group. Most of the color plates were calendar plates printed in Great Falls sometime between 1903 and 1913. Although many have been previously printed in magazines, etc, with only one or two exceptions these paintings are printed here in book form for the first time.''.
