About This Item

London: Macmillan, 1906. Reprint. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. London: Macmillan, 1906. Reprint. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Hardback. Reprint. Good/No Jacket. The 1906 reprint of this charming little book, first published by Macmillan in 1903 Seven separate chapters tell us the history and customs of some of the main coaching routes in olde England, namely, the Bath, Exeter, Portsmouth, Brighton, Dover, York, and Holyhead roads. Packed full of details of coaches, coachmen, passengers, inns and inn-keepers, etc. Accompanying the text are numerous fine pen-and-ink drawings by Hugh Thomson and Herbert Railton, depicting people, places and buildings encountered along the routes. A fascinating read for historians or simply anyone with an interest in the romance of the coaching era. Contains 376 pages, 17.5 x 11cm. Scarlet cloth boards in good condition with gilt titles and decor on front and spine, and gilt top edge. Internally, in very good condition: clean and bright with no markings, with tissue-protected pen-and-ink drawing (The Post Boys) on pre-title page. Overall, very good for its age with sound edges and excellent tight bindings.
