About This Item
Collection of 11 French offprints and extracts of articles concerning the history of the Islamic world, all by notable orientalists, covering diverse topics such as the architecture of the Arabs and Moors, the astronomy of the Chaldeans, the Hindustani language, the Persian chronicle Mojmal al-tawarikh, the Ghurid dynasty, the kings of Achlath and Mardin (modern day Turkey), the Persian Mozaffarid dynasty, the Persian Sultan Barkiarocq, and India, but also including the autobiography of the famous Arab historiographer and historian Ibn Khaldun. Most of the authors were students of the distinguished orientalist Silvestre de Sacy. "it was inevitable that French Orientalism in the first half of the nineteenth century should be dominated by de Sacy's students. The most prominent of these was Etienne-Marc Quatremère (1782-1857)" (Irwin). Four of the articles are written by a student of Quatremère, Charles Defrémery (1822-1883), who had a "high reputation as an orientalist" (Cooper) himself. With a manuscript index to the articles. A couple leaves slightly browned and a small tear in the title-page of the third article, otherwise in very good condition. Binding very good as well.l Cf. Irwin, For lust of knowing, p. 148; for Defrémery: Cooper, Men of the time (1884), pp. 330.
