About This Item

[Jingdezhen]. [Beijing]. [Lanzhou].: Various Publishers.. 1967.. Collection of 4 Cultural Revolution newspapers edited by various revolutionary and Red Guard committees in Beijing, Lanzhou and Jingdezhen. Each newspaper consists of 4 pages. All show browning, a little staining and small tears at folds and edges. Minor repairs done with washi paper. Text in simplified Chinese characters apart from some mastheads. Each page 38.6 x 27 cm. Issue 38 of 瓷都紅衛兵 "Porcelain Capital Red Guards", published 17 May 1967 in Jingdezhen features a few articles reporting lack of clarity in the political situation, with different groups all labelling each other counter-revolutionaries. An editorial calls for an end to the 'civil war' between various factions and to the competing '-isms'; anarchism, individualism, revanchism and small-groupism. In another article, the General Headquarters of the Red Guards explains 7 regulations for Red Guards visiting factories: quite possibly, the attitudes and behaviour of some Red Guards have been questionable.

Issue 39 of 瓷都紅衛兵 "Porcelain Capital Red Guards", published 24 May 1967 in Jingdezhen features an article praising the revolutionary literature and art team for creating new literature, ballet, symphonic music and art, which will promote proletarian revolutionary culture. This issue also includes a bloody description of a week-long battle in Chengdu between different groups, the 'industrial army' armed with guns and peasant workers armed with sticks fighting revolutionary rebel groups. Many died, buildings were damaged and some crops in areas surrounding the city were destroyed.

Issue 6 of 红干报 "Red Cadre News" published 20 July 1967 in Beijing calls for everyone to support and protect revolutionary cadres who have been the first to side with proletarian revolutionaries against capitalist-roaders in the Party. Other articles criticise the editors of the 首都红卫兵 "Capital Red Guards", for disregarding Party decisions and continuing to publish new editions, which just cause disunity. They must fall into line and form a new joint editorial team. This issue of "Red Cadre News" also contains a full page self criticism written by Liu Shaoqi on 9 July 1967.

Issue 19 of 公安战报, "Fight for Public Safety News" published 5 August 1967 in Shanghai describes a violent 'fascist' attack on revolutionaries attending an accusation meeting in a public square in the city. After driving a fire truck into the gathered revolutionaries, they were then chased into a building and beaten up. Another article suggests that the attack shows how vital it is to seize power from capitalist roaders who must be eliminated so that power can be consolidated in the hands of revolutionaries. .
