Very good copy of engraver John Spilsbury's fine engravings of Roman cameos

From the collections of the antiquarian Charles Francis Greville, politician Lord Algernon Percy, and art dealer Thomas Moore Slade.

Complete with title page, list of prints, and 50 copperplate engravings with deep and crisp impressions.

Published in parts from 1781 to 1784, and in collected form in 1785.

Subjects include Roman and Greek myth, figures of Hercules, Bacchus, Cupid, Mercury, Ariadne, Chimera, Amazons, as well as historical figures such as Cleopatra, Scipio Africanus, Gaius Maecenas.

John Spilsbury (1739-1795) was an English cartographer, engraver and publisher. He is also credited with the invention of the jigsaw puzzle when he created his first "dissected map" in 1766.

Brown leather spine with four raised bands, gilt tooling and title, edges scuffed and bumped, marble-boards stained, interior foxed and spotted (as usual with this title).
