About This Item
Hatchlands Park, Surrey, 1784-1785. 180 itemised bills, unsorted, all manuscript, some on small scraps of paper, three with printed headings, different sizes, in clean legible condition William Brightwell Sumner (1720-1791), member of the Bengal Council, made a fortune serving under Clive in India. Sumner purchased Hatchlands Park from Fanny Boscawen in 1770. His family continued to live at Hatchlands for four generations. This collection, recently discovered, provides a snapshot of the household economy of an eighteenth century country house in 184-1785. Three have printed headings of London suppliers: Fitzwater, Confectioner; Lazenbys Wax and Spermaceti Manufactory; Antrobus & Seaman, Tea-Men.
