About This Item
Primarily dating between 1919 to 1967, 105 books are inscribed with original drawings, nearly all in pen and ink, and overwhelmingly accomplished and detailed. Of these, 22 are either by or illustrated (or both) by Bacon, mostly inscribed to her son, but also to her then-husband and to her granddaughter; many others are either inscribed by her or are her own copies with her ownership signature or inscription. 83 other books by various authors, fiction, poetry, and non-fiction, were gifted by Bacon to her son (and also to a grandchild) with inscriptions and drawings. The drawings and inscriptions reflect Bacon’s humorous, wry and often off-center take on life, many picturing her lifelong interest in cats. In addition, there are miscellaneous items, some with her ownership signature or related in some way to her son or ex-husband, as well as two drawings and a charming Christmas card to her mother. The condition of the books is, for the most part, no better than good, and often not so good at all; numerous items are stained and worn, although only a few of the drawings were affected at all by adverse conditions.
