Various Small Presses. Various Sizes. John Martin, publisher of Black Sparrow Press, was a close friend and early supporter of Bukowski but also a friend of the legendary bookstore, Either/Or in Hermosa Beach. Along with Bukowski who hung out there often signing his books or making small drawings in her inventory, customers included Pynchon, Gide and others who liked the small press and unique poetry in the shop. In this collection which Martin gave to Lee Hendrix in her uncorrected proof copy of Septuagenarian Stew, as his New Year's Gift in 1990 three of what he called poignant Bukowski poems. That work is not included here but here are the three poems: (1) Night Work, Broadside, on black paper lettering in shaded white, circa, 1,000 copies printed, colophon: printed by The Toothpaste Press/for Bookslinger at the A.B.A. 1981/from Dangling in the Tournefornia/a book of new poems to be published this summer by Black Sparrow Press; (Krumhansl, 70].
