About This Item

Various Small Presses. Various Sizes. John Martin, publisher of Black Sparrow Press, was a close friend and early supporter of Bukowski but also a friend of the legendary bookstore, Either/Or in Hermosa Beach. Along with Bukowski who hung out there often signing his books or making small drawings in her inventory, customers included Pynchon, Gide and others who liked the small press and unique poetry in the shop. In this collection which Martin gave to Lee Hendrix in her uncorrected proof copy of Septuagenarian Stew, as his New Year's Gift in 1990 three of what he called poignant Bukowski poems. That work is not included here but here are the three poems: (1) Night Work, Broadside, on black paper lettering in shaded white, circa, 1,000 copies printed, colophon: printed by The Toothpaste Press/for Bookslinger at the A.B.A. 1981/from Dangling in the Tournefornia/a book of new poems to be published this summer by Black Sparrow Press; (Krumhansl, 70]. (2) Playing it Out, Broadside, in black Charles Bukowski, in red, Playing it Out, 1983, courtesy of Black Sparrow Press, printed by The Toothpaste Press, for Bookslinger, at the ABA, Dallas, June 1983. An unknown number of copies, poem later printed in War All the Time, 1984. Signed by Bukowski (Krumhansl, 78), and (3) The Cage postcard, on coated white card stock, lettering in red and black, 18 lines of text, in black Charles Bukowski, Limberlost Press, 1987 Signed by Bukowski.. Unknown number of copies printed in the spring of 1988. (Krumhansl, 107). Fine.
