About This Item
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1925. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Yellow cloth spine with paper label and red, blue and yellow decorated paper over boards with paper label. xvii, 108pp. Good plus. Age toned about the edges. Later printing of Cullen's first poetry collection, tight and decent. From the library of Senator Adlai E. Stevenson III (b. 1930), son of Illinois governor and twice presidential candidate Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65) and likely belonging to the governor's wife, noted socialite Ellen Borden Stevenson (1908-72), a noted poetry and literature enthusiast. Also interesting is that the age toning of the binding are likely smoking caused by a fire in the couples' Libertyville home, which burned down shortly after being built in 1935, destroying many of their possessions and antiques (rebuilt 1938) -- this small volume was apparently one of the rare survivors.

On Jul 22 2017, a reader said:
I've never read poetry before, it just did not hold my interest, until I accidentally picked this book up, while thumbing through a box of books I was going to donate. Needless to say, it will now stay on my office shelf for inspiration, calmness and a small taste of spirituality.
