Inscribed by author on ffep to British ornithologist William Eagle Clarke, dated Feb. 12, 1914. Building on his first systematic treatment of color nomenclature (Boston, 1886) – a publication that quickly became popular among the author's fellow ornithologists and naturalists in general – Ridgway's greatly expanded work also found an expanded audience, becoming a standard tool for producers of paints and chemicals, manufacturers of paints and furnishings, and florists, to name a few.
