About This Item
WITH FINE AMERICAN STATE & CITY MAPS
fourth issue folio 2 vols. [engraved frontispiece], [2 (title leaf)], [2 list of maps], 103 pages of boldly hand-coloured maps (some double page, and apparently one more than called for) plus numerous pages of accompanying descriptive text, contemporary half dark brown roan, cloth sides boldly gilt lettered at centres of front boards "Colton' Atlas/ Vol. I [II]", some scuffing to leather surface, bindings very neatly rebacked with the original spines relaid and the original endpapers reused, minor marginal stain at lower margin throughout vol.1, some dustiness to endpapers and edges, but else internally a clean copy.
The first volume, following some preliminary world maps, contains 54 excellent maps of the states and cities of the United States plus one of Mexico. In this issue the maps both of Texas and of Kansas/Nebraska which were single page in the first edition are now double page. This Atlas was first published by J. H. Colton in 1857 with reissues under his imprint in 1858 and 1859. The imprint for this 1860 edition was changed to Johnson and Browning but later issues reverted to the Colton imprint.
