About This Item
New York, NY: Viking Penguin, 1981. First Edition, First Printing . Hardcover. Collectible - Fine/Fine. Archival Photographs & Illustrations. Text/BRAND NEW. Bi-color boards/Fine. DJ/NF w/trace shelfwear. Halley's Comet re-visits us every 76 years or so. Last passed 1981-1984 into our Solar System, visible to the naked eye; will return in 2061. First recorded in the Chinese chronicle Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji) of 240 BC. Halley, in 1682, determined what man saw were periodic re-appearances of the same comet. Know Emperor Nero, in AD 60, to advert the comet's curse (prior viewings experiences), condemned his successors to death! In our times, windows were sealed windows in Chicago, 1910, to avoid "poisons" embodied in Halley's tail!!. Text supplemented w/color and b/w photos and charts. 160 pgs in 8 chapters. A history of human conjections, eventual scientific understanding spanning much, much time (a human invention), and what it is to be human.
