Nordhoff's survey of utopian communities, based entirely on personal visits, remains the most reliable and thorough examination by a contemporary observer, providing detailed and generally sympathetic descriptions of life at Bethel, Aurora, Icaria, Amana, Oneida, Zoar, and the various Shaker communities.
