About This Item

London: James Burns, 1840. A new edition, enlarged. Hardcover. Navy decorated cloth. Fold out maps. viii, 354p. Cover significantly soiled and abraded. Cloth puckering on back cover. Tear on front edge of spine. Rear endpapers stained at top edge. Pages and text are very tight, clean, and in remarkable shape. A stout book, especially for its age, in good condition. The book promises to be a concise, but comprehensive history of the Christian Church. Palmer's book is a volume in the "Englishman's Library" series. The periodization of the text begins in AD30 and extends to AD1839. These are the major divisions treated by Palmer: 30-320 and the faith of the early Church prior to legalization; 320-680 and the unity, corruption, abuses, and development of the Church; 680-1054 and superstitions, divisions between East and West; 1054-1517 and the progress of Christianity prior to the Reformation; 1517-1839 and the rise of post-Reformation Christianity, including special attention to British Christianity.
