Finally a large (app. 4" x 6") and unbelievably detailed ex-libris to front garde; this book came from the library of Charles Atwood Kofoia, a noted American zoologist. Bookplate features a bookshelf adjacent to a window, in which a cathedral is visible in the background, two orchids (?) framing the plate, and an ocean scene depicting a schooner collecting invertebrate specimens with a net on a line, and a clear subaqueous view of the sought-after protazoans. Fabulous!

-------
Rene Primavere Lesson (1794-1849) was a French naturalist, surgeon and pharmacologist who travelled and collected life specimens of mammals and birds. The scope of this work, evident from its title, is to serve as a supplement to the massive scholarship and research already performed by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788), a French naturalist who, during his lifetime, published 36 volumes of his Histoire Naturelle, with additional volumes from his notes, published posthumously for the next twenty years or so.
