About This Item

Garden City: Doubleday, 1953. First Edition. Signed and inscribed by the author H. Allen Smith at the front flyleaf: “For Walter Salefski - of East Walnut Street - from a former resident of West King. H. Allen Smith”. The front panel of the dust jacket has a full color humorous painting by Charles Addams. Fine copy in a near fine bright dust jacket with some minor dust soiling to the rear panel and a few tiny tears. Laid in is a typed postcard signed by H. Allen Smith to Mr. Salefski, postmarked April 23, 1968, reading in full: “Dear Mr. Salefski, Send the books along. My manuscripts have gone to Southern Illinois U. and I have no books for sale. I’d suggest you write to Arthur Morje, PO Box 2212, Philadelphia, Pa 19103. He handles out of print books and usually has a good batch of mine. Ask him for a price list on the ones you want. yrs H. Allen Smith”. Also laid in in a typed letter signed Mr. Smith “H.A.S.” to Mr. Salefski, dated May 3, 1973 on Smith’s personal printed stationery. It details various book issues and includes a paragraph about The Compleat Practical Joker, “PRACTICAL JOKER was published in Japanese a few years ago and my God how the yen poured in! It was in paperback, but a special Jap paperback, handsomer than some of our paperbacks.” With the addressed and postmarked envelope. With a bookplate of H. Allen Smith with “Denver - 1928” written by him in ink at the bottom border.
