James Kay, Jun. and Brother, 1839. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. 551 pages, frontispiece portrait of the poet. Edited and with a Preface to the American Edition by Henry Reed, Professor of English Literature in the University of Pennsylvania. Super 8vo (7" x 10-3/4"), leather bound with frayed corners and rubbed edges, gilt lettering in black block on spine, backstrip peeling from top (boards and backstrip in need of professional restoration); front and rear blank free end papers torn out (?), edges and interior margins brown with age, hinges cracked, some pages age-browned and foxing of various degrees across others. Name of former owner (Prof.) Ann Evans (Berthoff) and date 1941 written on front pastedown, notes in pencil by Prof. Warner Berthoff observed in "The Excursion" (related to Emerson) and a few other places. A well-used copy of a historically significant American edition.
