About This Item

London: Phaidon Press, 1950. Hardcover. Good (Boards are heavily worn on all surfaces; Dj is heavilyy shelf/edgeworn, with tears and bending at top and glassine chipping in places; pages are lightly age-toned; textblock is cracked.). Red cloth over boards with gilt lettering on the spine; illustrated color DJ with black lettering; frontispiece; 173 pp.; [107] pages of plates (3 folded); richly illustrated. "Since Vasari's time Paolo Uccello has been looked upon as one of the great pioneers of painting, a genius who devoted himself to the study of perspective and left the heritage of his discoveries to later artists. His frescoes in the cloister of Santa Maria Novella and his well-known equestrian portrait of Sir John Hawkwood in the Duomo at Florence rank with the outstanding achievements of Florentine art in the period between Masaccio and Michelangelo. The importance of the three famous battle-scenes in London, Paris and Florence has long been recognized, and their style, with its startling visual patterns and its bold juxtapostion of flat areas of colour, seems to foreshadow the painting of our own time. For all their realism, Uccello's paintings communicate a sense of fantasy that is unique in the history of painting." -- Dustjacket.
