About This Item
Chatto & Windus, London., 1880 [i.e. 1879]. First edition - precedes the U.S. edition by two months. Octavo. Two volumes: pp [iv], 309; [iv], 253. Original brown cloth decorated in black, lettered in gilt. Floral patterned endpapers. 32-page publishers' catalogue, dated December 1879, at end of second volume.Intriguingly, the half-title of the first volume is inscribed, ''Author's copy - James A. Hill''. Presumably Mr Hill was on the staff of Chatto & Windus. There is no sign that the book made it into the author's library.Inner hinges of first volume starting but tight. Small ink stain to fore-edge of first volume. Covers slightly marked. Heads and tails of spines slightly scuffed. A very good set. Scarce.
