Roster of Recipients Created in 1862, for forty years the Congressional Medal of Honor remained the only American Military Decoration. Recipents included Colonel Cody, Thomas Custer, Dr M Walker (the only woman to receive it) Generals MacArthur (father and son), Eddie Rickenbacker, York, Murphy, Boyington, O'Hare, Dean, and many more. At the time of this publication, the medal had only been awarded 3, 412 times. Since then heroism and sacrifice has earned additional awards in the military operations in Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. In 1983 the author, formerly on the staff of The New York Times, helped produce the events surrounding the dedication of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society's Hall of Honor at the Intreped Sea-Air-Space Museum in New York At these events the author met and interacted with 150 surviving Medal of Hoor awardees, the major of those still living. In this work are stories about some who earned the Nation's highest tribute.
