Cloth over boards. 295 pages illustrated with half-tone photographs, black and white drawings, diagrams, and maps, original cloth binding with an early monoplane embossed in gold on the front cover, good condition (minor shelf wear to edges and corners, rubber stamp of "The Hampshire Aeroplane Club" at top of front flyleaf), contents intact and clean.
Part I "Dirigible Balloons" includes chapters on principles, resistance of the air, the wind, construction, and history.
Part II covers principles of aviation and their application, aeroplane construction, description of some aeroplanes, early days of aviation, and the future of aerial navigation.

At the time of the California Gold Rush, shortly after the end of the Mexican War, in September 1849, Whipple and the man assigned to guard him, Cave Couts, were assigned to survey the new international boundary line in the vicinity of the Gila and Colorado rivers; as required by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
According to E. I. Edwards, who wrote the introduction, notes, and bibliography: "Of all the early accounts written by the emigrants of the gold trail who crossed our Southern California desert, none can claim quite the same degree of distinction that attaches to the Whipple Report .... "
