Durling.<p>Conrad Gesner [1516-1565] was a physician who, though plagued by poverty and ill health, managed to make significant contributions to botany, zoology, bibliography and philology. He was best known in his own time as a botanist and botany was his favorite pursuit throughout his life. The first four volumes of his zoological magnum opus Historia animalium were published between 1551 and 1558. The fifth volume was issued in 1587 after his death at the young age of 49.
