Cambridge: Cambridge at the University Press, 1926. Hardcover. Good. [xxviii] pp 548 Bound in blue cloth, good, covers lightly marked and worn to the corners, spine detached but present and complete. Signed to front free end paper 'J H Wilson, Jesus, Oxon'; a previous owner's signature has been crossed out. A very well-read copy with underlining, doodles and annotations throughout, especially to the end papers where significant dates in English mediaeval history have been noted. This book comes from the private collection of British Prime Minister Harold Wilson and his wife Mary who died recently at the age of 102. During his lifetime Harold Wilson kept the book in the Ashley Gardens mansion flat in Westminster that the couple shared until his death in 1995. After she lost her husband Mary Wilson continued to live in the couple's flat, surrounded by a lifetime's accumulation of books and memories until 2016. Good 1926

Pages with some foxing and tanning, particularly to endpapers and textblock edges. Some cracking to gutters with exposed netting. Binding slightly loose. A previous owner's name to front free endpaper. Boards have moderate shelf wear with mild bumping and fraying to corners and crushing and fraying to spine ends. All surfaces heavily tanned, particularly spine. Gilt lettering to spine is slightly dulled.

In quite good black cloth boards, gilt titles to spine. The boards are flat and fairly firm, marked to front with feint mug ring to front and all edges and sides of spine worn. Slightly tanned free end papers; the front free end paper has name of precious owner in ink;; the rear free end paper has brief notes. The cut edges are tanned. The text block is tight, straight and not tanned or foxed - very good condition. Overall condition is good plus as boards are rather worn. Not annotated. Without jacket. Rare edition.
