Manchester: Co-operative Union, 1929.. First edition. "This pamphlet is the substance of an address given to the Glasgow and District Co-operative Conference Association, 1929." Very good in original printed wrappers. Bookplate of J.J. Harpell on verso of front wrapper. Ink mark in margi n of one page and ink note in Hapell's hand (?) on another. A tight, clean and otherwise unmarked copy. 12pp. An interesting provenance and association. Canadian industrialist John James Harpell (1874-1959) was a major figure i n t h e C a n a d i a n c o - o p e r ative movement. In 1918, he established the Garden City Press which was run on co-operative principles. Inspired by the ideas of Ebenezer Howard, Harpell created Gardenvale in Ste.-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec a g a rd en c i ty f or t he e mp lo y ee s of t he P re s s and in 1922, he created the Institute of Industrial Arts to provide workers with educational opportunities..
