Cuban historian Herminio Portell Vila wrote the preface to that edition which was suppressed. The reasons for this reappearance are related to the triumph of the Cuban Revolution and Portell voluntary exile to the United States for its rejection of the Marxist-Leninist ideology adopted by the revolutionary government. Silvio Zavala stated in a contemporary review that the original preface showed the seriousness of matters dealt with in the contrapuntal play between sugar and tobacco in Cuba, with the working class employed in their cultivation as the core driver of the revolutionary movement in its role as advanced Cuban proletariat.
