About This Item

Edinburgh; London: Printed for C. Elliot; and G.G.J. & J. Robinson, 1787. Duodecimo (17.5 x 11 cm.), [i-v] vi-xii [13] 14-264. Stated "New Edition", sixth edition. Originally issued in 1773, with a second printing in 1774. The author explains that this new edition contains examples of Bills of Fare as well as a list of Ingredients by Season. Susanna Maciver ran one of the few cookery schools in Edinburgh, a task shared with Mrs. Frazer. Mrs. Frazer's book, The Practice of Cookery (1791), is largely based on this work. In later editions of Maciver's work, menus for dinners for five to fifteen people, as well as lists of ingredients in season month by month, are added. The book is missing its free front endpaper and is lightly soiled, but is otherwise internally sound and solid. In full brown calf with gilt-titled, red morocco spine label; starting at the hinges and creased across the boards. Good or better. [OCLC records eight copies of this edition (only three in the U.S.); Cagle 842; Maclean page 92; Vicaire 546].
