About This Item
Houston, Texas: The Anson Jones Press, 1951. Book. Good. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. A sound copy with minimal wear, but an ex-library copy with several stickers and stamps. This is an author-signed copy, which boosts the collectability despite the library markings. Green cloth with gilt stamping. 282 pages followed by a series of letters from business and community leaders, solicited by the author, which offer impressions of Texas wildcatter Glenn McCarthy, subject of the book. The book has a section of 40 pages of black and white photos documenting the life of the oil tycoon dubbed "King of the Wildcatters" and builder of Houston's famous Shamrock Hotel (completed in 1949, demolished in 1987). Additionally, the book contains endpaper images of McCarthy and a frontispiece color photo of him among some oilfield derricks. There is also a fold-out map at pages 268/269 titled Discoveries and Extensions by Glenn McCarthy. On the half-title page is an inscription in blue ink from the author: "May the world never run short of good men like my friend, Gordon Nicklos! Wallace Davis Jan. 15, 1966".
