About This Item

Garden City: Doubleday & Co., 1961. First edition, first printing. Spine a bit sunned, else fine.. Original glossy boards, octavo, 95 pp. Illustrated throughout with period cartoons. Text by Corey Ford. Perhaps the first humorous book on computers and computing. Ford's preface is presciently titled "A Computer in Every Home." The book's title makes reference to IBM's "Think" signs that were ubiquitous in workplaces during the 60s. This copy presented by IBM with printed card laid in. Additionally, the front free endpaper is inscribed and signed by IBM President Tom Watson, Jr. to W. L. Stewart (Jr.): "WL Stewart from Tom Watson Jr Christmas 1960." William Lyman Stewart, Jr. was the grandson of Union Oil Co. founder Lyman Stewart. His father William Lyman Stewart was president of Union Oil from 1914-1930. Thomas Watson, Jr. (1914-1993) was president of IBM from 1952-1971. His father, Thomas J. Watson (1874-1956), founded the company and was its president from 1914-1952. A fine association copy.
