UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,ex-library,new impression,1st thus. [Originally published 1969,this edn,a new impression published 1971.] NFINE/NFINE.No owner inscrptn, but oval, green ink public library stamp to front pastedown - partially covered by dw/djs' front, inner flap, the residue of removed ticket pocket to ffe, rectangular library stamp with library numeration towards foot of dedication page and 3 other oval, green ink public library stamp, one to bottom, lower corner pp21,another to upper page-edge corner pp27 and one to top,right-hand corner of pp51,and no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright,crisp,clean,glossy laminated,b/w photographic (wreck of the barque 'Glenbervie') illustrated upper panel of dw/dj,with orange lettering, with negligible shelf-wear and creasing to edges and corners. Most of the creasing occurs to the top edges, with both head+foot of spine/backstrip of dw/dj also minisculely bumped with reciprocal creasing - no nicks or tears present.Front inner dw/dj flap has a diagonal crease to it's bottom corner.Top edges slightly dust-soiled and minimally aged/ toned,fore-edges bright and generally clean; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - with no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips - an unread example? Bright, clean, green paper-covered boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters to spine/backstrip and near immaculate, plain white endpapers - apart from already aforementioned library stamp to front pastedown.Described hard but fairly and honestly, but still an exceptionl example, particularly for an ex-library book.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,ex-library,new imp,1st thus,5-264pp [paginated] includes contents+illus lists/ tables,an introduction,9 chapters,32pp of 50 contemporary b/w photographs+illus interspersed throughout the text and the book,23 b/w wreck location charts,12 b/w map sections based on Ordnance Survey maps, acknowledgements,an appendix,a bibliography,an index of ships and a general index.Plus [unpaginated],half title,b/w illus frntis, and title-page.
More ships have floundered off the coast of Cornwall and more wrecks remain in these waters than in almost any comparable stretch of coastline in the world. This book, the result of many years of research and personal exploration by the authors,is the detailed record of shipwrecks off the South Cornish coast between Plymouth Sound and Land's End over a period from around 500 yers ago to the present day.
Several hundreds of ships are mentioned, from fishing-boat to ocean liner, barque to battleship, each with its own dramatic story to add to the endless record of maritime disaster on this rockstrewn coast.
Accompanying the narrative are descriptions of the peculiar hazards of the coastline - including the depredations of the notorious Cornish 'wreckers' - and the special problems of ship-handling in the days of sail, together with accounts of notable feats of salvage and heroic rescues by life-boat crews and coastguards.
A special feature of the book are the many remarkable and hitherto unpublished photographs of shipwrecks, some taken in the early days of photography, others in the worst of weathers, yet many of them great pictures in their own right as well as unique records of the passing of fine ships.
Of particular interest to divers will be the numerous charts showing the location of wrecks along this stretch of coast, while the book as a whole will appeal not only to the historian and Westcountryman but to all who revel in stories of ships and of the sea in all its moods.
